# Onboarding requirements

> Why Anchorage Digital collects identity and activity information before opening an account, and the business types and jurisdictions it doesn't serve.

## Onboarding requirements

To comply with U.S. laws and regulations aimed at preventing money laundering, terrorist financing, and other financial crimes, Anchorage Digital requires information to verify the identity of its customers and understand expected transactional activity prior to account opening.

This information is crucial for regulatory compliance and helps ensure the security of the financial system.

## Prohibited businesses

Anchorage Digital restricts certain business activities based on its compliance policies. The following list, while not exhaustive, highlights the types of activities that are prohibited.

By using Anchorage Digital’s services, customers agree not to engage in these prohibited businesses:

* ATM/Kiosk Operator
* Illegal drug related businesses
* Quick loan provider, payday lender, loan workout or refinance businesses
* Bearer share companies
* Shell companies with no clear economic purpose or unclear ownership
* Foreign embassies, consulates, or missions
* Weapons-related businesses
* Internet sweepstakes gaming
* Unregulated crowdfunding or crowd-lending/financing businesses
* Unlicensed or unlawful betting/gambling related businesses
* Payable-through accounts (PTAs)
* Customers located in a region designated as sanctioned or of Primary Money Laundering Concern by the U.S. Treasury
* Financial institutions that should be licensed/regulated but have not completed their regulatory obligation to acquire licensing/registration

### Sanctioned or designated jurisdictions

* Cuba
* Crimea
* Donetsk and Luhansk
* Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea)
* Iran
* Sudan
* Syria
